We are just over a week away from the election and it is getting heated
up. I hope you have had a chance to catch some of the debates where there have
been some great exchanges. The critical thing we have been able to do is
separate ourselves from the current administration on both style and substance
levels.
Our campaign has focused on the right priorities: improving our schools,
enhancing public safety, and making core investments in better roads, a rail
connection to our airport, and developing our riverfront assets. The voters
have had a chance to see the difference in styles and approach during the
debates. We have shown that we will be an aggressive and decisive
administration and will not run from the tough issues.
This week we will be posting our position statement on "Public
Safety, Public Housing, Social Services & Neighborhood
Development." In this paper, we discuss how a new approach to
crime and public safety is needed to get necessary resources into the
neighborhoods and business districts. We must coordinate our public safety
expenditures with the County and not ask the taxpayers for yet another tax
increase, which was suggested by the current mayor. We must also stop the cycle
of co-dependency in our social services arena and start addressing fundamental
problems and solutions. We must go after federal funds to redevelop our public
housing, unlike the current administration which spent over $180,000 on studies
and withdrew from a public housing redevelopment process. On the other
hand, Winnebago County pursued the same grant funds and obtained an $18 million
grant to redevelop its housing stock. We must also provide sound property tax
and other incentives to homeowners and developers to rebuild our housing stock
in our older neighborhoods.
We still have a lot of work to do before April 5. Funds and volunteer work
is needed. Contact the campaign office directly or stop by the Downtown or East
Side offices. The current mayor has raised 60% of his funds from downstate and
Chicago sources and is expecting a ton of outside volunteers. I am so proud
that our funds and our people are local. This is a race for control of
Rockford's future. We need your help for Rockford to take back control of our
future. Please join us at our next event, this Friday, March 25, at 6:00 pm at
Medicine Man Graphics, for their Art for Change
fundraiser. This event features outstanding silent auction and live auction
items donated from local artists. The event will also feature live
music and wonderful food. I hope you can make it!
